Laptop Hinges, Top Case
Over time, you may notice your laptop not closing or opening properly and it can get bad enough where the screen is falling off, or it is coming detached from the base of the laptop. There are two main culprits at fault when this happens. One of them being the screws underneath are no longer keeping the case together and hinges secured to the top case of the laptop. The screws underneath fasten to the top case via a stand off. Unfortunately most of the times, the stand off is just molded plastic, and the threaded nut that is meant to attach the screw detaches from the broken plastic . The lcd assembly will then start to break away from the rest of the laptop. The second issue that can happen is when the screws attaching the hinges to the lcd lid, in the bottom corners of the lcd assembly, break away from the lid and the lcd will look like it is popping out through the lcd bezel and away from the lid. ComputeRx can help with both scenarios. Depending on the availability of parts, sometimes the hinges can be fastened back to the lid with a screw and nut going through the lid itself to secure the lcd assembly in place. (replacing the lid or top case though is the best option in most cases)
Typical symptoms include (as seen from pictures):
-
- Laptop not being able to close or open properly
-
- Display assembly completely broken off in one corner or both
-
- Display “popping” out in one corner or both
